Missouri Schedule Preview - Z. Lynn's Predictions

I won't bother saying whether or not Post Route will continue this Fall, but with College Football thick in the air, I couldn't help but type this up.  As for my prediction credibility, well, let my unprecedented 4 pool victories last year speak for themselves!  We can argue about these picks all we want, but let's be sure to come back to them at the end of the season.
Here they are!

Mizzou vs. Southeastern Louisiana
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 21 points
A standard warm-up game.  If Missouri loses this one for some reason, the rest of the season is really irrelevant, since they should get kicked out of the SEC and demoted to the FCS immediately.

Mizzou vs. Georgia
Winner: Georgia
Margin of Victory: 13 points
Yes, Georgia running back Crowell is off the team.  Yes, the Bulldogs have some key players suspended.  But this is still the team that won the SEC East, and then played an entire half of perfect defense against LSU, the runner-up in the National Championship.  Georgia QB Murray, already one of the best in the SEC, will continue to improve.  Look for the Georgia D to dominate in Mizzou's SEC opener, as the famous "Missouri Spread" is put to the test.

Mizzou vs. Arizona State
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 7 points
After a heartbreaking overtime loss at ASU last year, the Tigers look to return strong against a team who lost their QB to the NFL.  Look for the Sun Devils to put up a good fight as both teams are still working out the kinks, but Mizzou gets revenge at home.

Mizzou at South Carolina
Winner: South Carolina
Margin of Victory: 17 points
This will be one of Mizzou's toughest games this year.  In their first ever SEC road game, the Tigers will be overwhelmed by the atmosphere and talent of the Gamecocks.  If Mizzou doesn't put up a good fight, this one won't even be close.

Mizzou at UCF
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 14 points
Mizzou looks to get its third win at Conference-USA opponent Central Florida.  UCF has had some success in C-USA in recent years, but won't be able to get the job done against former Big-12 Tigers.

Mizzou vs. Vanderbilt
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 8 points
I like how Vanderbilt has improved in the past couple of years, but I was disappointed in their bowl loss to Cincinnati last year.  I'm not one to believe they're as bad as people make them sound, but unfortunately for the Commodores, a game in Columbia is not going to help them overcome that stereotype.  The Tigers control a low scoring game, one not so close as the 8 point margin of victory might indicate.

Mizzou vs. Alabama
Winner: Alabama
Margin of Victory: 24 points
Did I say the SC game would be tough?  So will the Crimson Tide and their 19,000 traveling fans.  Look for the defending national champ to do to Missouri what they do to just about every other team they play: dominate.  Mizzou will be lucky to score 10 points as the Crimson TIde make themselves right at home in Columbia.

Mizzou vs. Kentucky
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 13 points
The Wildcats have been slacking lately, and in my mind the home-field advantage all but guarantees the Tigers get a fairly painless win.

Mizzou at Florida
Winner: Florida*
Margin of Victory: <3 points
This game is possibly the hardest to predict at this point.  I'm not entirely sure how good Mizzou or Florida will be, but since the game is in the Swamp, I have to give the edge to the Gators.  Missouri will win only if they are better than expected AND the Gators are worse than expected.  I'm not expecting much from Florida this year, but it will take another 6-6 year or worse for the Tigers to overcome them in the Swamp.

Mizzou at Tennessee
Winner: Tennessee*
Margin of Victory: <3 points
This game will be another close one.  Tennessee will be a very tough place to play, and returning quarterback Bray is very talented.  In my mind this game depends entirely on Mizzou being able to show us something special at the start of the season.  If they surprise and turn out to play better than expected, it could be Missouri on top by a slim margin.

Mizzou vs. Syracuse
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 13 points
Syracuse is a mediocre team in the mediocre-at-best conference, the Big East.  A late season non-conference tune up game results in another Missouri victory.

Mizzou at Texas A&M
Winner: Mizzou
Margin of Victory: 4 points
Both teams will have been through a first year in the SEC that could be tougher than they'd anticipated.  There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the Aggies for the past two years, but I think Missouri gets it done.  Mizzou won in College Station last year with a worse team than they should have this year, against a better A&M team.  Through some terrible planning, this will be the third year in a row Mizzou plays at Texas A&M, but the Tigers get their third victory in a close one.

Final Record: 7-5 or 8-4
SEC Record: 3-5 or 4-4
*If Missouri ends up 8-4, it's because they win one of these games.  It will be extremely tough to win both.

Week 6 Preview - Top 25

Week 6 College Football Picks

October 7th, 2011 – The trials and tribulations of college finally caught up to me last weekend and consequently halted my picks column; three tests and two papers (including a dreaded foreign language composition) will do that to most people! Alas, I return this weekend with a tightened up version of the weekly predictions as several mouth-watering games await fans eager for college action on the gridiron.

2 Weeks Ago: 22-4
Season: 64-8

#3 Oklahoma vs. #11 Texas -- #3 Oklahoma: 31, #11 Texas: 24
A valiant fight from the Longhorns will come up short as Oklahoma stud QB Landry Jones exposes the Texas’ D in the Red River Shootout. One of the fiercest rivalries in college football returns to its days of glory with a top-11 matchup. Texas and its lucky season garners its first blemish despite keeping it close throughout.
KEY MATCHUP: David Ash vs. Oklahoma LBs – Texas duel threat QB David Ash has been setting opposing defenses ablaze with his legs thus far. Oklahoma’s LBs are a different breed however, with targets on opposing stars and the ability to make plays. This matchup will be key in deciding the outcome.

#17 Florida @ #1 LSU -- #1 LSU: 27, #17 Florida: 24
I anticipate the Gators will keep this game much closer than last week’s matchup vs. the Crimson Tide in which they were run roughshod out of the Swamp en route to a 38-10 defeat. The Gators will utilize a heavy dose of star tailback Chris Rainey and try to improve upon their 1.1 ypc average that led to last weekend’s huge loss. LSU sees former star QB Jordan Jefferson return as they look to stay unbeaten and continue their magical run through the gauntlet that is their 2011 schedule.
KEY MATCHUP: Chris Rainey vs. LSU D-Line – LSU’s D-Line is much like Oklahoma’s LBs: a different breed. Big, strong, powerful, and explosive, they symbolize everything that SEC defense stands for. Rainey is a small, explosive tailback that has the ability to turn any play into a huge gain. This matchup will once again determine the Gators’ fortunes.

#15 Auburn @ #10 Arkansas -- #10 Arkansas: 37, #15 Auburn: 35
Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson finally found his stride last Saturday, leading the ‘Hogs to a stunning come-from-behind victory over the Aggies of Texas A&M and throwing for a school-record passing total in the process. If Wilson can continue to build upon that performance and gather momentum, look for the ‘Hogs to eek out a tight victory over defending national champion Auburn and its star RB, Michael Dyer.
KEY MATCHUP: Michael Dyer vs. ‘Hogs D – Dyer’s got the powerful tree trunks that college RBs dream about to go with darting quickness that allows the back to hit holes with force. The Hogs gave up 38 points in a tight win last weekend and their “bend, don’t break” philosophy will come under fire from Dyer and his team.

Vanderbilt @ #2 Alabama -- #2 Alabama: 45, Vanderbilt: 6

#5 Boise State @ Fresno State -- #5 Boise State: 53, Fresno State: 24

Kansas @ #6 Oklahoma State -- #6 Oklahoma State: 62, Kansas: 20

Colorado @ #7 Stanford -- #7 Stanford: 38, Colorado: 17

Boston College @ #8 Clemson -- #8 Clemson: 34, Boston College: 16

#12 Michigan @ Northwestern -- #12 Michigan: 38, Northwestern: 31

Maryland @ #13 Georgia Tech -- #13 Georgia Tech: 49, Maryland: 21

Ohio State @ #14 Nebraska -- #14 Nebraska: 22, Ohio State: 17

Connecticut @ #16 West Virginia -- #16 West Virginia: 28, UConn: 14

Kentucky @ #18 South Carolina -- #18 South Carolina: 24, Kentucky: 10

#19 Illinois @ Indiana -- #19 Illinois: 45, Indiana: 27

UPSET SPECIAL: Missouri @ #20 Kansas State – Missouri: 34, #20 Kansas State: 24

Miami (FL) @ #21 Virginia Tech – #21 Virginia Tech: 22, Miami (FL): 21

#22 Arizona State @ Utah -- #22 Arizona State: 34, Utah: 13

#23 Florida State @ Wake Forest -- #23 Florida State: 45, Wake Forest: 3

#24 Texas A&M @ Texas Tech -- #24 Texas A&M: 31, Texas Tech: 27

Iowa State @ #25 Baylor -- #25 Baylor: 45, Iowa State: 20

Louisville @ North Carolina – UNC: 31, Louisville: 17

Pittsburgh @ Rutgers – Pittsburgh: 27, Rutgers: 24

Iowa @ Penn State – Iowa: 17, Penn State: 13

Georgia @ Tennessee – Georgia: 35, Tennessee: 31

Week 4 Preview - Top 25

Jordan Kuehne
Week 4 College Football Picks

September 23rd, 2011 – My undefeated reign came crashing back to earth last weekend after I missed out on a pair of upset picks and saw Pittsburgh somehow blow a 17 point fourth quarter advantage against Iowa (thinking ACC much?). After a week full of controversy and conference realignment chatter, I’m ready to get back into action with another batch of picks. This weekend once again brings us another slate chock full of exciting matchups led off by an SEC power against a possible future SEC power in Morgantown, WV. Enjoy the games everybody!

Last Week: 25-4
Season: 42-4

#2 LSU @ #16 West Virginia -- #2 LSU: 20, #16 West Virginia: 17
LSU’s got a dynamic defense. West Virginia features a mobile dual threat QB and a rugged environment that welcomes College Gameday. This battle of two powers may come down to who can hold onto the ball longest. Look for the Tigers to win there and grab the W.

KEY MATCHUP: LSU Defensive Line vs. QB Geno Smith – This matchup centers around LSU’s beastly D-Line against Geno Smith’s mobility. If the Tigers can stop Smith’s legs, they’ll stop his game.

#14 Arkansas @ #3 Alabama -- #3 Alabama: 31, #14 Arkansas: 20
A classic SEC showdown in Tuscaloosa, this will be a huge test for Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson. While he has one of the best WR corp. in the nation, Wilson goes against the top D in the nation in their own backyard. Behind Trent Richardson and solid ball control, the Tide should roll to a big conference win.

KEY MATCHUP: Alabama Defense vs. QB Tyler Wilson – A swarming D with serious speed will look to knock down Wilson on every play. Whether or not he can handle the pressure will determine what slim chances the ‘Hogs have to win this matchup.

#7 Oklahoma State @ #8 Texas A&M -- #7 Oklahoma State: 38, #8 Texas A&M: 35
This game has all the fixings to be a shootout. Whether it’s the top pass offense in the nation (Cowboys) or a duel threat rushing attack (Aggies), both teams have little regard for defense. Oklahoma State Heisman candidate Justin Blackmon will open up the field for the visitors and grab a late touchdown to snag the final Big 12 victory for Oklahoma State in College Station.

KEY MATCHUP: Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon vs. Anybody – Can anyone stop Blackmon? Highly unlikely. While his streak of 14 straight games with over 100 yards receiving came to a halt last weekend, look for the dynamic future top-5 pick to start a new one in style today.

#11 Florida State @ #21 Clemson -- #11 Florida State: 21, #21 Clemson: 20
Florida State’s got a strong defense, as evidenced in limiting Oklahoma’s potent offense to just 23 points last weekend. Clemson is coming off a huge win for Dabo Swinney against Auburn, ending the Tigers’ losing streak to their SEC foes. Quite simply, this matchup likely comes down to who plays QB for the Seminoles – EJ Manuel is hurting and may not go. If that’s the case, look for Clemson to bring the heat and hurry the visitor’s signal caller.

KEY MATCHUP: Florida State QB vs. Clemson D – With the question of who plays the role of starting QB for the ‘Noles in the air, it will be crucial that the eventual starter avoids turnovers and controls possession in Death Valley. The swarming Clemson D ate up Auburn last weekend after a slow start and will look to do the same in a big ACC matchup.

Missouri @ #1 Oklahoma -- #1 Oklahoma: 42, Missouri: 24

Tulsa @ #4 Boise State -- #4 Boise State: 52, Tulsa: 21

South Dakota @ #6 Wisconsin -- #6 Wisconsin: 70, South Dakota: 0

#9 Nebraska @ Wyoming -- #9 Nebraska: 45, Wyoming: 27

#10 Oregon @ Arizona -- #10 Oregon: 38, Arizona: 21

Vanderbilt @ #12 South Carolina -- #12 South Carolina: 34, Vanderbilt: 16

#13 Virginia Tech @ Marshall -- #13 Virginia Tech: 33, Marshall: 20

#15 Florida @ Kentucky -- #15 Florida: 31, Kentucky: 10

Rice @ #17 Baylor -- #17 Baylor: 49, Rice: 7

UTEP @ #18 South Florida -- #18 South Florida: 45, UTEP: 13

Portland State @ #20 TCU -- #20 TCU: 59, Portland State: 3

San Diego State @ #22 Michigan -- #22 Michigan: 37, San Diego State: 28

UPSET SPECIAL: #23 USC @ Arizona State – Arizona State: 34, #23 USC: 30

Western Michigan @ #24 Illinois -- #24 Illinois: 45, Western Michigan: 17

North Carolina @ #25 Georgia Tech -- #25 Georgia Tech: 42, UNC: 27

Notre Dame @ Pittsburgh – Notre Dame: 31, Pittsburgh: 23

Georgia @ Ole Miss – Georgia: 34, Ole Miss: 17

Temple @ Maryland – Maryland: 24, Temple: 23

Colorado @ Ohio State – Ohio State: 27, Colorado: 13

Southern Miss @ Virginia – Southern Miss: 35, Virginia: 31

Cal @ Washington – Cal: 28, Washington: 20

Kansas State @ Miami (FL) – Miami (FL): 34, Kansas State: 21

Week 3 Preview - Top 25

Jordan Kuehne
Week 3 College Football Picks

– After a somewhat surprising undefeated run (even to myself) through the 17 game gauntlet last weekend, I return eager and ready for what promises to be an exciting – and important -- week three of college football. As I did last week and will continue to do moving forward, the first three games that are listed consist of the marquee matchups on this weekend’s slate. A new addition will be a brief break down of a key matchup that could decide the outcome. After last week’s unblemished record, I’ve decided to challenge myself and tackle a few non-top 25 matchups as well this week. Enjoy the games everybody!

Last week: 17-0
Season: 17-0

#1 Oklahoma @ #5 Florida State -- #1 Oklahoma: 27, #5 Florida State: 23
Seminoles fans have been awaiting this moment for a while – College Gameday is visiting campus and so are the top-ranked Sooners led by Heisman candidate QB Landry Jones. Behind Jones’ arm and dynamic WR Ryan Broyles, the Sooners’ firepower will prove too much for a Florida State defense that has bared its teeth thus far against inferior competition. FSU CB Greg Reid will score a TD on some sort of return but it wont be enough as the ‘Noles fall short on another big stage.
KEY MATCHUP: WR Ryan Broyles vs. CB Greg Reid – two first round prospects for next April’s NFL draft, the winner of this matchup will likely play for the victor of the game. Reid’s speed is well documented but Broyles is as crafty as they come at WR.

UPSET SPECIAL: #3 LSU @ #25 Mississippi State -- #25 Mississippi State: 21, #3 LSU: 17
Offense has been up over the opening two weeks of the season; while the Tigers have shown what they’ve got (a top 5 defense/special teams), the Bulldogs have been thwarted in a close call against the other big cat in the SEC, defending champion Auburn. If Mississippi State’s going to get over that hump, this will be the week – a national stage for a Thursday night special, look for Chris Relf to relish the chance and come out firing while MSU manages to shake things up and disrupt Jarrett Lee and co. as the national title picture gets another early shakeup.
KEY MATCHUP: QB Chris Relf vs. LSU defense – Relf has come into his own over the last 12 months, developing himself into a strong gunner under center as a solid nucleus of weapons has surrounded him. He’ll face his toughest challenge yet when the Bayou Tigers come calling tomorrow night.

UPSET SPECIAL 2: #17 Ohio State @ Miami (FL) – Miami (FL): 31, #17 Ohio State: 20
Somewhere, Jim Tressel and Nevin Shapiro will be watching this scandal-marred matchup between former ACC and Big Ten powers. On the field, both teams haven’t been at their best as OSU was outgained and outplayed by a tough-as-nails Toledo squad last weekend. Al Golden’s team fought hard but came up short in College Park two weeks ago and will be looking to get off the hook on another national stage. This game’s outcome boils down to one player: Jacory Harris. If the ‘Canes QB is on point, it’s lights out for the Buckeyes; if turnover-prone Jacory shows up however, OSU will probably come out on top.
KEY MATCHUP: QB Jacory Harris vs. himself – suspended for the season-opening loss to the Terps, Harris needs to come out of the gate strong and establish a rhythm if he hopes to be successful Saturday night. Miami will go as Jacory goes.

#4 Boise State @ Toledo -- #4 Boise State: 52, Toledo: 24
Speaking of Toledo, the Rockets will play host to the distracted Boise State Broncos Friday night. Boise was slapped with three years of probation this week as they officially arrived on the big stage of college football after receiving their first NCAA sanctions in program history. That won't stop Kellen Moore from threading needles through a haystack as the improved Rockets hang around early before the rout begins in earnest in the third quarter.

North Texas @ #2 Alabama -- #2 Alabama: 62, North Texas: 3
I’m being awfully generous even giving the not-so-Mean Green a field goal. The top ranked Alabama defense should go to town against the overmatched Sun Belt opponent, notching a couple of touchdowns while RB Trent Richardson puts up another big game as the Tide roll in Tuscaloosa.

#6 Stanford @ Arizona -- #6 Stanford: 38, Arizona: 27
A bunch of wounded Wildcats come home to Tucson for a late, late night (9:45 CST) matchup against Pac-12 conference foe Stanford and Heisman favorite Andrew Luck. Fresh off a beatdown at the hands of Oklahoma State, Arizona’s QB Nick Foles has to be hoping his offensive line can offer him some semblance of protection in the pocket this week. Unfortunately for the Arizona signal caller, top wideout Juron Criner is expected to be out after having his appendix removed a week ago. Andrew Luck will burn a hapless Wildcats’ secondary and a late Arizona rally will fall short as the Cardinal move new coach David Shaw’s record to 3-0.

#7 Wisconsin vs. Northern Illinois -- #7 Wisconsin: 34, Northern Illinois: 28
Played at Soldier Field, this game will be a lot more exciting than the average fan might expect. While Badgers QB Russell Wilson will ultimately win the game behind his dynamic scrambling ability, NIU is capable of collapsing the pocket and will be the stiffest test ‘Sconnie has play thus far. The Huskies have a duel threat of their own, veteran QB Chandler Harnish, as well as a host of weapons on offense that will test a pliable Badgers’ D. A late Wilson TD will put the game out of reach but not before NIU sends a scare through fans sporting red and white everywhere.

#8 Oklahoma State @ Tulsa -- #8 Oklahoma State: 45, Tulsa: 24
This Sooner State showdown had the potential for upset to be written all over it when the schedule was originally set. A host of factors have changed that since then, including a combination of the Cowboys being great (crushing Arizona in Stillwater last week, 37-14) and Tulsa’s inability to keep up with the #1 Sooners in the opening week (a 47-14 lambasting). With all-everything star Damaris Johnson still suspended, Tulsa will watch with envy as Heisman candidate WR Justin Blackmon puts up another 100+ yard game en route to an Oklahoma State victory.

Idaho @ #9 Texas A&M -- #9 Texas A&M: 45, Idaho: 10
While Texas A&M’s admission to the SEC is still in question due to potential legal ramifications, this game against the Vandals is not. The 12th Man will be raucous as the Aggies roll to victory.

Navy @ #10 South Carolina -- #10 South Carolina: 37, Navy: 14
Finally, a breather for South Carolina. While Navy is no joke on or off the playing field, their triple option attack will only cause a swarming Gamecocks’ D so much trouble before the game is put out of reach by a resurgent Stephen Garcia and Marcus Lattimore.

Washington @ #11 Nebraska -- #11 Nebraska: 27, Washington: 13
Unfortunately for the Huskies, Jake Locker is now wearing a Tennessee Titans’ uniform. A third matchup between these programs in the last 12 months hinges on whether a somewhat disappointing ‘Huskers team can turn it around after trailing Fresno State deep into the second half last weekend. I think they will as duel threat QB (I’m sensing a theme in 2011 with quarterbacks) Taylor Martinez looks to improve upon his ridiculous 8.9 yard-per-carry average.

Missouri State @ #12 Oregon -- #12 Oregon: 70, Missouri State: 0
Poor Missouri State struggles against fellow FCS programs. Imagine how they’re going to feel after three hours in Autzen Stadium on Saturday.

Arkansas State @ #13 Virginia Tech -- #13 Virginia Tech: 52, Arkansas State: 17
While Arkansas State did destroy Memphis last week, the level of competition rises this week (Memphis is ranked an FBS-worst 170th in the Sagarin rankings) as they visit Blacksburg and Lane Stadium. The Hokies survived their annual non-conference scare last weekend and should run all over the Red Wolves.

Troy @ #14 Arkansas -- #14 Arkansas: 34, Troy: 17
As the best the Sun Belt Conference has to offer, Troy will do their best to hang tight with the Razorbacks. That effort will prove futile however as Arkansas will utilize the best receiving corps in the nation en route to a comfortable victory.

#15 Michigan State @ Notre Dame – Notre Dame: 28, #15 Michigan State: 24
Notre Dame has to be tiring of schools from Michigan. After a stunning loss at the hands of the Wolverines last weekend, the Irish turnaround and play the other state school, the Spartans of East Lansing. Tommy Rees showed what he’s made of as he composed what was thought to be the game-winning drive against the Wolverines. His growing moxie and favored target, superstar WR Michael Floyd, will overcome Spartans’ star RB Edwin Baker’s two rushing touchdowns in what promises to be another nail biter in South Bend.

Tennessee @ #16 Florida -- #16 Florida: 34, Tennessee: 31
Ten years ago, this game would have likely played a role in the national title picture. Fast forward to today, Florida is picking itself off the ground as first year coach Will Muschamp guides them back to national prominence while the Volunteers ride the electric arm of Tyler Bray to the endzone. Bray will get his to the tune of 300+ yards passing and three touchdowns threw the air but Florida has enough weapons to counter their rivals from Knoxville as they notch a tight win in the Swamp.

#18 West Virginia @ Maryland -- #18 West Virginia: 21, Maryland: 20
West Virginia trailed at halftime to Norfolk State last weekend. Think about that for a second; that being said, it means nothing when another big matchup in an ACC stadium (one of four on the weekend involving ranked teams visiting ACC territory) goes the way of the visitor. While Maryland can certainly move the ball (they were in the redzone on 66% of their possessions against Miami), they make too many mistakes to win a game like this just yet. The ‘Eers squeak out a win, capitalizing on turnovers and riding Geno Smith to a 3-0 mark.

Stephen F. Austin @ #19 Baylor -- #19 Baylor: 62, Stephen F. Austin: 7
RG3 is going to have a field day against SFA. I’ll say that the rejuvenated Heisman candidate adds insult to injury with over 450 yards of total offense, accumulating six scores in the process as the Bears maul their in-state visitors.

Florida A&M @ #20 South Florida -- #20 South Florida: 52, FAMU: 6
BJ Daniels has to be enjoying the cupcakes that USF has been devouring upon of late – after blowing out Ball State last weekend, the Bulls QB should run over the Rattlers on the way to a dominant triumph.

#21 Auburn @ Clemson -- #21 Auburn: 34, Clemson: 20
If Clemson hadn’t squeaked by Wofford, I might make them my third upset special of the week. Auburn, who has been making a habit out of skating to narrow wins and proving critics wrong in the process, should grab a hard fought win in Death Valley as RB Michael Dyer and WR Emory Blake power a high-flying Tigers’ offense.

#22 Arizona State @ Illinois – #22 Arizona State: 41, Illinois: 38
This game has shootout written all over it. With the Sun Devils hot off a titillating win over Mizzou last Friday, Brock Osweiler and co. will look to keep momentum going as they invade Memorial Stadium and take on Nathan Scheelhaase’s Illini. A battle of passing acumen will go Arizona State’s way as Osweiler’s mobility and emerging weapons at wideout help the Pac-12 score another key non-conference win.

Louisiana Monroe @ #23 TCU – #23 TCU: 49, Louisiana Monroe: 7
SuperFrog will be doing a lot of pushups as TCU rolls in a romp.

#23 Texas @ UCLA – #23 Texas: 24, UCLA: 23
The McCoy to Shipley connection lives on. No, not Colt to Jordan but rather younger siblings Case to Jaxon. Case McCoy, the new Longhorns’ starting QB after Garrett Gilbert’s struggles finally got him the boot, will look to Shipley on numerous occasions as a stout UCLA defense tries to secure a big home win. Zone-read QB David Ash could be the difference for Texas as they move the chains late and hold on for a narrow win in Pasadena.

Western Illinois @ Missouri – Missouri: 45, Western Illinois: 10
James Franklin gets another week to ease into the offense after creating some fireworks last weekend in Tempe. Mizzou rolls to an easy victory on Family Weekend in Columbia.

Virginia @ North Carolina – UNC: 24, Virginia: 13

Ole Miss @ Vanderbilt – Vandy: 17, Ole Miss: 14

Kansas @ Georgia Tech – Georgia Tech: 31, Kansas: 26

Pittsburgh @ Iowa – Pittsburgh: 27, Iowa: 20

Penn State @ Temple – Penn State: 24, Temple: 21

Week 2 Preview - Wrap-up

I thought I'd weigh in on a few of the big games and story-lines this weekend.
Let's start with the SEC...

   - South Carolina at Georgia
This was a tough pick.  The temptation is to go with the rest of the nation, and say the Bulldogs will bounce back after their disappointing loss to Boise in week one.  I'm afraid this won't be the case.  The Gamecocks struggled early against East Carolina, but recovered with a 56-37 victory.  I expect Lattimore to carry the Gamecocks to another victory, propped up by the improved play of South Carolina's D, who will be facing a still-inexperienced crew in Georgia's offense.  The game is played in Athens, but that's a short trip for the Gamecocks, and they should be fresh and ready to go.

   - Mississippi State at Auburn
Our very own Jordan Kuehne picked the Tigers in this one, and I agree with him in one aspect of his outlook: Auburn will be much improved.  They are the defending national champions (albeit without Cam Newton or Nick Fairley) and will be looking to redeem themselves after almost losing to Utah State.  (I mean, come on!  Utah State!)  But I'm taking the upstart Bulldogs in this one, but not because of Auburn's close call.  I'm simply a believer in this Mississippi State team.  I picked them as one of the most underrated teams going into the year, and tomorrow we find out if I was right.  The Bulldogs are a team on the cusp of the top-tier.  They are a few big wins away from the beginning of an elite run.  If they pull off a win at Auburn, they will be one step closer to that goal.

   - Notre Dame at Michigan
The big question for this game is: Can Notre Dame bounce back?  My answer is simple: No.  The quarterback switch will give the Irish hope, but in the end the environment will prove to be too hostile, and an overall superior Michigan team will prevail.  Michigan's defense will continue to improve, as it was one of the worst in the nation last year.

   - TCU at Airforce
The big question for this game is: Can TCU bounce back?  My answer is a resounding yes.  They may not be where they want to be just yet, but they can definitely take care of Air Force.  The defense will have had a lot of coaching this week, and Airforce's ground-based attack should be much easier to defend than the aerial show of RGIII.  Pachall will lead his offense to victory and improve his impressive leadership skills.  He is probably already determined never to lose again (he looks like they dug him out of a grave - he's not quite the nice, sweet Andy Dalton we're used to!)  Should be a nice win for the Frogs.

   - Alabama at Penn State
It will be interesting to see how Penn State will fare this year, and how much they can improve from the past couple of seasons.  Unfortunately, I think Nittany Lion fans will have to wait until Big 10 play to find out, because Alabama will throttle their team.  This is an intriguing match-up at first glance, but it doesn't really tell us anything important about how either team will fare in conference play.  The Tide wins big, and moves on to week 3.

That concludes our preview portion of week 2.  Tune in for all the action tomorrow, and don't forget tonight's battle in the desert.  (You already know my take on that one, we'll see how it turns out).
